Case Study: Les Mills employs plants to boost gym health
The health and design challenge
Les Mills’ purpose is to ‘Improve the Lives of New Zealanders’ and this commitment extends to providing a healthy gym environment for members and healthy office environment for staff. Les Mills wanted to include plants in gyms and offices to improve air quality and reduce noise. They also needed the installation to strengthen the brand’s design aesthetic.
The GreenAir plantscape solution
The Les Mills installations were designed and completed by plantscape and living wall specialists, Green Air. The installs were created to strengthen the visual appeal as well as the healthiness of the gyms and offices in six locations: Les Mills on The Terrace, Les Mills Hutt City, Les Mills Extreme, Les Mills Hamilton, Les Mills and Les Mills International head offices.
Striking arrays of plants were arranged in ceramic pots that perfectly tied with the Les Mills brand colours and complemented the dynamic exercise and office environments.
The outcome achieved with the plantscape
With all the perspiring, huffing and puffing that goes on in our clubs, the plants really help to keep the air clean and pure, says Jo Ealand, National Facility and Sustainability Manager at Les Mills.
“Plants also create a healthier workplace for our staff and increase productivity by absorbing background noise. And of course, they’ve had a great visual impact with staff and members,” says Ealand.
Research shows that office plants help to create healthy workplaces and increase staff productivity by absorbing, diffracting and reflecting background noise in buildings. Plants also reduce levels of carbon dioxide, which can accumulate in buildings from human respiration and the by-products of heating systems and electrical equipment. Controlled tests have also repeatedly shown office plants are effective at removing formaldehyde, zylene and benzene from the air. The chemicals are commonly found in building materials and furnishings.
