Case Study: Icebreaker
Inspiring Adventures in Nature:
Icebreaker is born in nature, with the merino wool sourced from the Southern Alps of New Zealand, and it is worn in nature, by passionate Icebreakers all over the world. A deep belief in the importance of connecting with nature is integral to the Icebreaker brand. This brand ethos and commitment drove the design brief for the new global office to stress the importance of having nature inside. The use of planting within commercial spaces to improve indoor air quality and general health and wellbeing is well known. However in this case, the planting was also a critical part of the design and concept for the space; it was essential to Icebreaker their people experienced nature even when working indoors.
The design challenge:
Jasmax had a specific design and concept plan which GreenAir needed to meet while balancing the need to specify appropriate designs to ensure long term success and growth of planting.
The GreenAir solution:
GreenAir quickly grasped the concept of Jasmax were proposing and were supportive and enthusiastic in bringing this to fruition. Using GreenAirs in-depth knowledge of appropriate planting and growth patterns meant all parties could be confident the design would be realised successfully. This was achieved with clear communication and frequent meetings with designers on site during the fit-0ut process. Harry Rowntree Jasmax
Utilising this early engagement, GreenAir were able to conduct controlled trials with the selected species to ensure that the environment on site would indeed support the health and growth of the plants. It also ensured most of the selected plants were well established and growing healthily when the office became operational.
GreenAir were proactive throughout the design phase, fit out design process and frequently met us on site to ensure things were going according to plan. Harry Rowntree Jasmax
Bringing the outdoors inside:
Global office staff at Icebreaker now enjoy a uniquely energising environment, connected with nature while they work. Over time studies suggest they will experience better health and improved productivity. GreenAir selected a wide range of plant species to work within the space that added texture and interest in the plant palate. The use of trailing foliage helped to soften some of the sharper lines in the building as well as adding life and visual interest. The green bridge was an excellent challenge that allowed us to try something unique. The finished result gives the feeling of a pathway through a forest, using ferns and low growing groundcovers to give a brilliant flash of green and a real feeling of bringing the outdoors in. The use of indoor plants to increase employee productivity up to 15% was noted in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Applied.
The finished project exceeded expectations. Both the design team and client (Icebreaker), are very satisfied with the result. Harry Rowntree Jasmax
